Having a website is one of the most powerful assets you can have in your marketing arsenal. Almost every digital marketing strategy is designed to drive traffic to your website. From there, UX designers take over.
Any business channel or messaging will leave a lasting impression on the user – and this is especially true for websites. Obviously, user experience is the most important aspect of the website. For the site to convert, the UX design has to “click” with the correct target market.
What is User Experience (UX) Design?
From Wikipedia, user experience (UX) is how a user interacts with and experiences a product, system or service. Keep in mind, this is from a bird-eyes view. In the case of the website, UX design involves the content you produce to reach the user and click with them before they navigate their way to your products/services.
Actionable Steps To Improve Your UX Design
1) User Research- In UX designing, the question you need to consistently ask yourself is, “Who is it for?” Consider this as the UX design version of the target market in marketing. Consider things such as demographics, interests, behaviors, hobbies, family, jobs, etc. Spend some time figuring this out before even starting on the interface program.
2) Simple Design > Complex Design – Humans are drawn to simplicity. If anything gets too complicated, and the user has to search for (work hard to find) whatever it is they’re looking for. They will quit, and you lose a potential customer. Have a clean layout, uniform colors and fonts, and some white space.
3) A Generous Friend: Whitespace – Whitespace is the space between your elements – text, pictures, buttons, etc. A subtle amount of whitespace in your website design will make the design look polished. Too much or too little and your design will have no flow. Some ways to use white space include increasing line space in the text, increase white space in long text blocks on side margins, and group related subjects/objects together with the whitespace.
4) Make Sure Elements Are Distinctive – This is important to keep the user path flexible and have an engaging user experience. Make it easy for the user to navigate the page and find what they are looking for on your website. Otherwise, the user will get frustrated and have a bad experience.
A few tips to keep in mind during the design process:
- Make the most important details the most visible.
- Navigational tools to help the user be aware of their location.
- Strong, contrasted call-to-action (CTA) buttons
5) Get Customer Feedback – Do you want to run a successful business? Ask for feedback from your customers and listen to what they have to say. This goes for any aspect in your business, but it is especially true for user experience design.
A good way to do this in UX design is to set up a survey on your website for them to rate their experience. For example, you may ask questions like:
- What should we do to enhance your experience?
- What features would you like added in the future?
A good user experience design is compatible with both the user and your platform (in this case, your website). Lead the user to the material they need and make it easy by simplifying the design and deleting any unnecessary elements.
A business owner should go through any means necessary to have a website that has intuitive interactions and interfaces with the user. This allows the user to find and use the content on your site.
